about

"Rise Up, Shepherd (and Follow)" is a black American spiritual, or what some still refer to as a Negro spiritual. It probably has roots dating to the days of slavery in America and undoubtedly comes from the southern region of the United States. "Rise Up, Shepherd" was first recorded in the 1940s by the popular African-American soprano Dorothy Maynor, with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and Sergey Koussevitzky, giving the songl its first wide exposure." —Answers.com

lyrics

There’s a star in the East on Christmas morn
Rise up, shepherd, and follow
It will lead to the place where the Christ was born
Rise up, shepherd, and follow

Follow, follow, rise up, shepherd, and follow.
Follow the Star of Bethlehem,
Rise up, shepherd, and follow

If you take good heed to the angel’s words
Rise up, shepherd, and follow
You’ll forget your flocks, you’ll forget your herds
Rise up, shepherd, and follow

Follow, follow, rise up, shepherd, and follow.
Follow the Star of Bethlehem,
Rise up, shepherd, and follow
